GSA Support Grants (2021-22)

Reviews in Progress

The GSA Support Grant review team is currently reading through the applications and will be determining finalists and winners soon. We hope to make announcement to the grant recipients by March 31, 2022. Thank you!

Call for Applications - Open January 1st – 31st

Saint Louis University’s Graduate Student Association (GSA) is pleased to announce this opportunity for financial support for graduate students whose academic progress has been or will be adversely affected by recent and ongoing extraordinary and extenuating circumstances.

The GSA recognizes that over the past few years, health, civic, and financial crises (among many other situations) have created challenges above and beyond the norm for many graduate students. These circumstances have created barriers for many students’ academic progress (toward research, writing, or other degrees and qualifications), such as postponed studies, canceled archival trips, loss of assistantship funding to caregiving or financial responsibilities.

Therefore, the GSA will be offering 14 grants in the amount of $3,000 each to assist students in making progress toward their research and/or degrees. These grants will be awarded on need-based circumstances (a demonstration of recent or impending jeopardy in their research and/or degree) and will be reviewed by a panel of faculty/staff and graduate students (external to the GSA). Awarded grant monies will have no usage restrictions or requirements.

Eligibility Requirements

Applicants must meet the following criteria:

● Be a current SLU student, part- or full-time

● Be a graduate student, Master’s or PhD

● Be a student in a program that is both a contributor to the GSA and is in good standing with the GSA as of the Spring 2021 semester*

● Not be receiving a graduate assistantship or fellowship from SLU for the 2021-2022 academic year

*See the GSA Constitution and Bylaws for additional information on departmental membership and good standing. For questions regarding department status and standing, please contact gsa@slu.edu.

To Prepare for Application (When the Application Portal Opens January 1st in the Scholarship Suite)

In addition to general biographical information and contact details for their advisor or supervisor, applicants must submit a cover letter (3 pages maximum) clearly describing the following:

a. The applicant’s recent, ongoing, or impending financial or other relevant circumstances;

b. How and/or why those circumstances have or will affect their research or progress toward their degree (emphasis on progress and not a description of the research/project); and

c. How the GSA Support Grant will assist them in progressing their research and/or degree; this should include anticipated use of the funds awarded.

d. Applicants may also include any other details they feel are relevant to their situation or needs that would strengthen their application.

Call for Volunteers!

We are looking for one Master’s student and one PhD student to serve on the grant review panel. Please note: these students would not be eligible to apply for the grant and should also not be currently serving as a GSA department representative. If you are interested in volunteering, please contact gsa@slu.edu!
